The objective: to bring desert golf to the desert, while preserving the natural beauty of the land. The site chosen for Bighorn's golf course demanded an architect who understood how to capture, not alter, the majesty of the Santa Rosa Mountains, and who would create a course that would be both challenging and enjoyable to play. Renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills was the obvious choice to design Bighorn's 6,888 yard Par 72, 18 hole championship golf course. Arthur Hills explains his philosophy: "The site sets the tone. An architect shouldn't impose his signature on a course. He should work within the natural context he's given." At Bighorn, the terrain is special. The elevation ranges from 810 feet to 1,150 feet, so the mountains become more than just a backdrop. The views are simply awesome. Bighorn is a stunning achievement by the only architect whose designs were named Best New Private Course and Best New Public Course in the same year. For more than two decades, Arthur Hills has designed a series of carefully conceived, world-class championship courses, each unique, each offering more than players had hoped. I try to exceed expectations," Hills says. "Not in terms of difficulty, but in good construction, strategic design, beauty, maintenance, and consideration and protection of natural features." Internationally recognized as a premier golf course architect, Hills has created over 150 golf courses world wide, and renovated more than 100 others.
